The Django Festival Allstars, the “sensational” gypsy-swing juggernaut lauded by George Benson and crowned by DownBeat as the hardest-swinging band to hit Newport, return to Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center for a fiery four-night stand, July 10–13. Tickets are on sale now at https://ticketing.jazz.org/19015. Listeners can expect a heady rush of Parisian hot-club swing infused with modern jazz muscle—blazing guitar dialogues, soaring violin flights, dazzling accordion runs, and a pulse that never stops moving.
Leading the charge is Samson Schmitt, son of gypsy-jazz legend Dorado Schmitt, whose fleet improvisations keep Django Reinhardt’s legacy vibrantly alive. Beside him, accordion and accordina wizard Ludovic Beier, violin virtuoso Pierre Blanchard, rhythm-guitar powerhouse Francko Mehrstein, and groove-minded bassist Antonio Licusati shape an all-acoustic engine that swings with the abandon of 1930s Montmartre while slipping effortlessly into Ellingtonian elegance, Armstrong swagger, and, on a whim, even a Stevie Wonder detour.
The New York residency is the centerpiece of a summer itinerary that begins June 26 at the Festival Django Reinhardt in Fontainebleau, France, then crosses the Atlantic to ignite the Montreal Jazz Festival on July 4. Independence Day weekend finds the group in Maryland for back-to-back nights at Baltimore’s Keystone Korner on July 5 and 6 before a hop to Connecticut’s beloved venue The Kate in Old Saybrook on July 8 and a private University Club concert in Manhattan on July 9. After the Dizzy’s run, the Allstars close the first leg of their tour out on the East End, performing at LTV Studios in Wainscott on July 15. Additional U.S. dates will follow.
Critics agree the Django Festival Allstars deliver the most exhilarating gypsy-jazz on today’s stage. The Wall Street Journal calls their show “the best jazz in town,” while concertgoers from Birdland to the Hollywood Bowl leave raving about the quintet’s mix of virtuosity, soul, and sheer joie de vivre.
Born out of the long-running Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland, the Allstars have grown into an international phenomenon, carrying the fire of Paris to the world’s premier halls and festivals. Their mission—honor Reinhardt’s revolutionary guitar voice while fearlessly expanding the vocabulary—remains unchanged, and every performance crackles with proof.
Experience the fire of Paris, the soul of jazz, and the spirit of Django—live at Dizzy’s Club, July 10–13. Seats are limited; reserve yours today.
