There comes a time when everyone needs a fearless escape, a moment to say yes to, an opportunity to revive your soul in a magical place. That time is nearing, because Suwannee Roots Revival is just around the bend, happening October 9–12 at The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida.
Each year, as restlessness sets in, I find myself craving the peace this festival brings and this year is no different. If anything, the pull feels stronger. I can hardly stop myself from loading up the car and heading east. Festivals like this are vital to my spirit, and I can’t wait to see you there dancing beneath the live oaks, swimming in the deep dark Suwannee River, and singing out into the night.
A Lineup Full of Heart
This year’s lineup is stacked with talent. Oteil & Friends headline, joined by iconic acts like Yonder Mountain String Band, Donna the Buffalo, Peter Rowan & The Walls of Time Band, Brian Elijah Smith, The Ain’t Sisters, Florida’s own Walter Parks, The Lee Boys, and many more.
Returning favorites include Grass Is Dead, Sloppy Joe, Della Mae, and Jon Stickley Trio. Songwriting lovers are in for a treat with sets from Vernon Thompson, Jim Lauderdale, and the Nikki Talley Band. The incomparable John Mailander returns as Artist-at-Large.
A Camper’s Paradise
First-timers, prepare to be spoiled. The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is a full-fledged camping resort with every amenity imaginable. Regardless of whether you’re tent camping or rolling in with a luxury RV, you’ll find the perfect site. Primitive spots are plentiful, while upgraded campsites can be reserved through the park office.
If camping isn’t your thing, the park also offers cozy cabins, and there are a few motels right off the exit.
The Spirit of the Suwannee truly is a gem of the South. I started camping there in the early 1990s, and it’s been a joy to watch this family-run haven grow. The park sits on the legendary Suwannee River and trust me, you’ll want to dip your toes in. It’s tradition. The river carries a restorative energy that seems to wash away whatever you’ve been carrying.
Everything You Need, Right There
Once you arrive, you won’t need to leave. The park has everything: a general store, golf cart rentals, canoe livery, and the beloved SOS Café, home to one of the festival stages and some of the best air-conditioned meals you’ll ever have at a festival.
Clean bathhouses are scattered throughout the park, and there’s nothing quite like a refreshing shower after a day of dancing beneath the oaks.
More Than Music — We’re Family
What truly sets Suwannee Roots Revival apart is its community. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and familiar — like a family reunion bound by music, love, and peace.
Many attendees put their heart into decorating their campsites, each with its own theme and flair. You can feel the love as you stroll through the park and watch them come alive.
Musicians, bring your instruments! Jam sessions are always happening at Slopryland (hosted by Sloppy Joe) and The Bill Monroe Tent (hosted by Quarter Moon). Both welcome players of all levels and often go late into the night. Some of the best music happens around the campfires, under the stars.
Something for Everyone
Families will love this festival too. There’s a kids’ tent with daily activities, a full vendor village filled with local art and delicious eats (hello, fried brussels sprouts!), and morning yoga for the early risers.
If you’re into hands-on learning, stop by the Music Farmers Stage at the Back Porch for workshops led by performing artists. If you play guitar, banjo, or percussion, these sessions are full of authenticity and generosity.
The Countdown Is On
