Chicago‑based bluegrass quartet Henhouse Prowlers will unveil their sophomore studio album, Unravel, tomorrow, April 19, on renowned roots imprint Dark Shadow Recording. The twelve‑song collection—eleven originals and a daring, harmony‑rich take on Genesis’ “Land of Confusion”—finds the band stretching musical boundaries while staying rooted in the high‑octane string‑band drive that has made them international ambassadors of American acoustic music.
Producer Stephen Mougin (Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush) guided the sessions at Dark Shadow’s Nashville studio after an intensive Chicago songwriting retreat. “With four really strong and prolific songwriters, we had a pile of great material to cull through,” Mougin says. “These eleven originals, alongside one carefully selected cover, are a snapshot of who the Henhouse Prowlers are right now. I hope listeners experience the full range of emotions we felt in its creation.”
Unravel opens with the uplifting “Look Up to the Sky,” gallops through the cinematic “Palomino,” wrestles with heartache on “Headin’ for a Heartache,” and ascends to the anthemic closer “Climb the Mountain,” before the band’s banjo‑driven re‑imagining of “Land of Confusion” brings the journey to a rousing finish. The album showcases the pen of every member—Ben Wright (banjo), Jake Howard (mandolin), Chris Dollar (guitar), and Jon Goldfine (bass)—as well as co‑writes with Carolyn Kendrick, Brenna Carroll, and Grammy‑nominated songwriter Rick Lang. Mastering legend David Glasser (Airshow Mastering) provides the final sonic polish.
To celebrate, the band will host an official release concert Saturday, April 19, at The Maurer Concert Hall in Chicago, where fans can hear the new songs live for the first time. Later this month the quartet will dive deep into the record on SiriusXM’s “Sidetracks” special, offering behind‑the‑scenes stories of the writing and recording process.
Since forming in 2004, Henhouse Prowlers have logged countless miles across four continents, pairing virtuosic picking with an educational mission that introduces bluegrass to audiences in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Unravel captures that global perspective while reaffirming their Midwestern roots—proof that, even as they push stylistic boundaries, the Prowlers’ collaborative spirit remains unbreakable.
Unravel is available tomorrow on all digital platforms and at henhouseprowlers.com. Physical CDs and vinyl can be purchased at the release show and through Dark Shadow Recording’s online store.
